It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.

"No theory, no ready-made system, no book that has ever been written will save the world. I cleave to no system. I am a true seeker."

Thus begins my blog with the insight of the immortal Mikhail Bakunin, 19th century Russian anarchist and contemporary of Vissarion Belinsky, the man from whom I take my pseudonym. I think those three sentences succinctly do justice to the aim of this blog.

Originally from California, I am a college student at a particular East Coast liberal arts school majoring in theatre and philosophy. I am a straight, white male from an upper-middle class family. Exciting, isn't it? There are some more interesting details to my past, but I do not care to divulge them here, not at this point. Patience, dear reader, and you may learn more with time. (And I know you are eager to dive into the depths of my soul.)

As for the future, I know not what it holds for me, but I am rather confident that my destiny does not lie on Wall Street or anywhere else in the financial district of any city. Try a bit further north, perhaps just south of Central Park. Time shall tell.

As for politics, I was raised in one of those typical upper-middle class liberal environments. Loyalty to the Democratic Party was expected. I've always maintained similar underlying beliefs about politics (e.g., we ought to help the disadvantaged and promote the well-being of all), but my idea of how to achieve this has radically changed over the years. I think I've shifted from one of those standard Democrats to a reformed Marxist sympathetic to Trotsky to some sort of libertarian socialist, which is what I'd now call myself.

I'd like to continue speaking about my political journey, but the clocks are striking thirteen, and I must remain true to the title of my post. Au revoir, dear reader. Until next time.

The title of this post is the first sentence of Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell's 1949 masterpiece. How fitting that today truly is such a day.
