Message from Italian courts: Now OK to beat innocent civilians
Many Anarchists and anti-globalizationists will remember the spectacle of the 2001 Genoa uprising against the globalization policy of world governments - which is, at least in connection with the WTO, really more or less just a hegemonic attempt to monopolize global markets with large agribusinesses at the expense of the welfare of poor farmers - with fondness and rightly so. It was a success in delivering a message to the world that, for the part of Anarchists in the first world, we still care for the world’s poor and about social justice.
Still though, as with all uprisings, the state reacted and brutally molested and raided innocents on flimsy excuses of “state protection” in the following days. In response to the disgusting acts on the part of the state though, coupled with public outrage, Italian Anarchists took the cops to court attempting to seek some justice for the dead and the beaten.
This week, the verdict is in,
There was uproar in a Genoa court last night after some of Italy’s highest-ranking police officers, accused of masterminding a savage attack on peaceful protesters at the G8 meeting in the city seven years ago, were cleared of the charges against them.
This is absolutely disgusting. Italian police not only brutally killed and tortured individuals in the uprising, refusing them their human rights, but they even raided schools, bashing heads in with enough force to put them into comas.
What’s wrong with the world?
